Becca Jones

Becca Jones was born and brought up in Carmarthen, and came to faith at a young age.

After leaving school she came to Cardiff to study medicine, and quickly made her spiritual home with us here in St Mellons, where she is still a church member. Becca has always had an interest in missionaries and their work, and as she went through her medical training she felt an increasing call to serve God in Africa.

In 2008 Becca graduated, and two years later she took a year out of her job as a doctor here in Wales to work at Kiwoko Hospital in Uganda, a year which gave her further confirmation that this was where God was calling her to serve him. September 2013 signified the start of a second year in Uganda, and in November 2015 she returned there as a long-term missionary.

Kiwoko Hospital is a 250 bed hospital situated in a village in central Uganda, and serves a rural population of around half a million people. The hospital was founded in 1988 on strong Christian principles, every day still begins with worship and prayer, and their motto is ‘We treat, Jesus heals’.

Becca’s primary responsibility in Kiwoko is for the Neonatal Unit, although when she is ‘on call’ at night and on the weekends, she has to take responsibility for the rest of the hospital too.

Kiwoko Hospital has a dedicated mission team, witnessing to patients on the wards, and carrying out work with students and children, and also visiting prisons to share the gospel. Becca is able to share her faith with her patients and their families, and she is also involved in leading student Bible studies.

Paula Harris

Paula was born and brought up in Cardiff.

She became a Christian at the age of 19, and joined St Mellons Baptist Church where she had attended Sunday School for many years. She is still a member of our church.

After spending some time working in secondary schools alongside children with behavioural and learning difficulties, Paula realised that she had a God-given gift for loving and caring for challenging children, for whom many others have little time. Paula then trained as a primary school teacher, and taught at an inner city school in Birmingham.

For many years Paula had the desire to go to South America to share the gospel with the children living on the streets and in 2004 she had the opportunity to go to Brazil with a short term team, spending time on the streets and experiencing the work first hand. It was at this time that the Lord began to call her to work full time in this ministry. After two years in Bible College in Bridgend, she arrived in Brazil in 2011, learnt Portuguese then spent 10 years in Belem, a hot and humid city in the north near the Amazon Rainforest working with street children and teenagers in prison. There were challenges but she saw the wonderful work of the Lord changing people’s lives as they came to know Him.

In March 2021 Paula moved back to the UK and is now sharing the good news of Jesus Christ with various groups of people, including the homeless, in South Wales.
